About SelfhostIndex
SelfhostIndex is an automatically generated index of 1352 self-hosted, open-source projects, scored on how actively each one is maintained.
How it is made
This is worth stating plainly, because it changes how you should read the site: every page here is generated by a script. A scheduled job pulls the latest public repository metadata, recomputes every score, and rebuilds all 5063 pages from scratch. Nobody writes these pages by hand, and nobody edits an individual score.
That has a clear cost and a clear benefit. The cost: there is no hands-on reviewer who has personally deployed each of these projects, so you will not find installation war stories or opinionated feature critiques here. The benefit: nothing rots. A hand-written "best of" article is wrong within a year and nobody goes back to fix it. Every number on this site is recomputed weekly, and a project that stops shipping loses its rank automatically.
What it is good for
Ruling options out. If you are choosing between six projects that all look plausible, the health score tells you which two have not had a commit in a year — the ones that will cost you a migration in eighteen months. Narrow the field here, then evaluate features yourself on the survivors.
What it is not good for
Final decisions. The score does not know whether a project has the specific feature you need, whether its security model suits you, or whether you will enjoy running it. It also systematically understates small, finished tools that genuinely need no further commits — a limitation documented honestly on the methodology page.
How it pays for itself
Through hosting affiliate links, disclosed on every page that carries them and listed on the disclosure page. Software projects cannot pay to be listed or ranked, and the ranking is produced by a script that has no input they could buy.
