Is Strix actively maintained?
Over the last 11 months the project absorbed 125 commits, of which 6 arrived in the most recent quarter — roughly 2 commits a month.
Activity is cooling: commits are down 95% against the previous quarter. One slow quarter is normal; two in a row is a signal.
The most recent tagged release, v2.2.0, shipped within the last month — a current, installable version exists today.
Strix ranks #6 of 8 tracked video surveillance projects. Several better-maintained options exist in the same category — they are listed below.
What Strix actually does
Strix is a utility designed to automatically locate functional stream uniform resource locators for internet protocol cameras. It then outputs configuration files tailored for systems like Frigate and go2rtc. This automates the tedious discovery phase of setting up a local video surveillance network.
Best fit: Home lab operators and self-hosters who are setting up multiple internet protocol cameras and want to skip the manual work of finding stream endpoints.
Worth knowing: Development activity has slowed down recently, which might mean slower responses to protocol changes or camera firmware updates. It also depends on the stability of third-party camera discovery methods.
Deployment notes
Because it is distributed as a container, you can typically run it via Docker with persistent volume mounts for saving generated configurations. You will generally want to secure the web interface behind a reverse proxy if exposed outside your local network.
